OLD Mausoleum

Hugh and Emily Malcolmson

Hugh Malcolmson was born in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. He immigrated to Canada in 1857 and married Alexina 24 May 1861 in Hamilton, Ontario. They moved to Chatham shortly after their marriage. She was a distant cousin and her maiden name was Malcomson (without the "l") and also an immigrant from the Orkney Islands. After she died he remarried Emily Lavinia Wood who was born in England in 1885. After Hugh died she returned to Hamilton to live near or with relatives and died there. She was returned to Chatham to be buried in the Mausoleum with her husband. Hugh started out as a grocer (merchant) according to the 1871 and 1881 census. By 1891 he was a wholesale grocery merchant and then became a manufacturer in the canning business. When he died he was retired. At the time of his death he lived on Victoria Avenue in Chatham.
