The Duart Cemetery

With Thanks to Dan McDonald and the Book "Orford Story"

In the 1850's and before, people in the Duart Cemetery were interred in the Ford Cemetery in Aldborough Township next door.

In 1864 it is thought that land was purchased from John Poore for a new Cemetery for the Duart area. It has always been a public one with no church on the site. The first two people interred in the new cemetery were a McDonald, and a man named Alexander Blue.

In 1875, the grave digger was Thomas Ford. He received the princely sum of $1.75 for each grave that he dug.

By 1905, 3/4 of the plots were sold in the cemetery. Plots at that time sold for $7 for a plot with 8 burial spots. $4 for a plot with 4 burial spots. And $10 for a plot in the new area.

The cemetery is still very active today.
