History of the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church Cemetery of South Buxton

(Now St Andrew's United Church Cemetery)

And The First Regular Close Communication Baptist Cemeteries

With Thanks to Bryan Prince

Author Bryan Prince mentions...

Quote "The small cemetery on the north side of Middle Line just west of the Shadd Road has the earliest Buxton/Elgin Settlement burials beginning about 1850. The larger eastern part of the cemetery is on what was Rev King’s farm and was the Presbyterian graveyard. Connected to it on the westerly side was “the First Regular Close Communication Baptist Church of Buxton” cemetery, which was sold to the church in 1853 by former slave George Hatter. The stones here are also in a row and there are many more burials then are represented by tombstones. I am not sure when the last burial was but suspect it was last used in the 1800’s. If you stand on 98 highway facing the cemetery, you can see a fence row behind the cemetery that is the proper dividing line for the 2 properties. There is only a very small section on the left (west) side that is the Baptist Cemetery. I expect it would have been larger at one time. " End of Quote
