The Old Cemeteries of Blenheim

We have been able to find almost NO information at all on these cemeteries. Were they Church oriented and if so what Church? Were the graves moved? Where did the monuments go? When were the cemeteries closed and when was all physical identity of them obliterated? What were their names? About all we know today is their almost certain location.

We do need to always remember that there will be other graves in the town. In those very early days people would bury their relatives on their own property. We must remember that there will always be large numbers of these graves located in lost locations all though Chatham-Kent. In fact all through Canada. Many would have had wooden markers but those are long gone today. Their graves are no lost forever!

There are some memories that point to either the Shopper's or Horton's Parking Lot Cemeteries being a Pauper's Cemetery. As of now there is some conjecture to this and if there were indeed monuments at one point piled behind the old grocery store on the Horton's lot, this would tend to disprove that theory. (Few Pauper's had the money for stone monuments.)

The following is stored here temporarily until more information is found on this... It would suggest that there might be a Potter's Field area behind the restaurant today. However so far we have not found any indication of burials further back than those exactly on line with the front of the store.

At this time we have no idea on whether burials in this location were moved or not. However, we feel from the history of other such sites that it is almost certain that some burials will still exist here even if only a few that were long forgotten. It is likely that at least some of those back then though were moved to another location. Where is no longer known and when the monuments went is long lost in history.

Researcher Les Mancell writes... And it seems there was at least one tombstone known along Chatham Street ... possibly the Methodist Church had a cemetery there ...
