History of the Mausoleum at Riverview Cemetery

The Monument of 3 year old Margot Lacey
who drowned in 1943. This interment may have been
done before the Mausoleum was officially opened.

The following history was researched and documented by Henry Van Haren.

The construction of the Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum proved to be a test of the town councils patience and determination as the project was plagued by financial problems and construction delays which threatened the completion of the entire project. Shortly after construction began, money was stolen by the president of the Interprovincial Mausoleum Company (IMC) a Major J. L. Langley, who was in Wallaceburg to oversee and manage the construction. This left the company on the brink of liquidation and unable to continue with the project with-out the help from Town Council and the crypt owners. The IMC under new management held meetings with council to find a solution that would see the Mausoleum completed.

This process continued on and off for the next 13 years with the work halted completely for several years during this time. The following information is a timeline put together from articles found in The Wallaceburg News from the 1929 groundbreaking until final completion in 1942 (building) and 1943 (landscaping).

The first internment took place in 1943 with either Margo Lacey or Margot Lucy Karisk. I have been unable so far to confirm the first internment due to lack of information on the latter.

Information is taken from articles in The Wallaceburg News. Date of article is listed at left with page # in brackets. Title of article is written in bold and italic. Full articles can be viewed at the Wallaceburg Library in their microfiche collection.
