Some History of St Phillipe's Cemetery

With Thanks to Leroy Myers

The St Phillipe's Church and Cemetery were opened in 1882. It is a Roman Catholic Cemetery not affiliated in any way with Chatham-Kent Administration. The original land was donated by Moses Martin and Joseph Chefs. The Church was built right on the Cemetery property for the huge sum of $6,000.00. This original grant of land consisted of 10 acres of property.

Four acres of this property was used for a school. The rest was kept for Church and Cemtery with a Hall being built first and a Church soon after.

Later further land was donated by Emile Pinsonneault for land to be used for a new Church at a new location.

Although this is a Catholic Cemetery, it is one where others of other faiths are able to be interred as well.

In 1986 an additional 2 acres of land was donated by Mrs Emery. Thus the Cemetery is well set for land for the foreseeable future.

One well known person interred there is Maurice Bossy MP, and MPP. We are told that he did not attend services there but he simply liked the location.

The Church was closed along with many others around the year 2007. However, the cemetery is still very much in use.
