Some History of The Wallace Cemetery

With Thanks to David and Louis Sherman

And the Mayhew Family in Glencoe

As with so many of these cemeteries we have so little history. However. We do know that the Wallace Cemetery was supposed to be the cemetery for a town by Erastus Wallace just slightly up river from present day Thamesville that we know today. And there was a road that went quite close to the cemetery along the river. That road was later closed and moved to where Longwoods Road now runs. The town by Erastus Wallace was to be called "Thamesville". The Thamesville we know today was first called "Tecumseh", but it was later changed to "Thamesville".

We have been told that there used to be monuments to two boys in the cemetery, but these are likely now covered with sod over the ages. We now have no way to obtain names, etc. We do know that there were no further monuments visible at the time of the original cemetery documentation in the 1980's.

Unfortunately for the Wallaces their town (to be called Thamesville) never "Took hold" and their Rail Road Station was never built, and thus the cemetery was not used to any extent. But we need to remember that it was originally supposed to be a larger cemetery just like the Sherman one "Right next door" to it. It was NOT simply a family burial spot as so many of these small cemeteries were.

If you know of further information on this cemetery's history or that of any others in Chatham Kent please let us know. We would love to print it as long as it can be verified.
