The Wolf(e) Creek, and the Tobin? Cemetery

The Wolf(e) Creek Cemetery

Wolf(e) Creek Cemetery

Please note that there are a number of stories here that we cannot sort out with information available today. Please consider this information with care!

As of early fall 2013 we know almost nothing about Wolf(e) Creek other than the fact that it probably existed. It is another of Chatham-Kent's very early cemeteries, and although it was NOT part of Chatham at the time of it's use it is very close to the city now. We are attempting to find out more about this one, but that may or may NOT come to pass.

It is mentioned as being on Park Avenue at Creek Road.
It is though also mentioned on the C-K on-line map showing the Wolfe Creek cemetery as being on Farm directly across from the cemtery. Patrick Bullard had also placed it there (though he also said the Tobins were there).

So, basically, TWO possible locations known for it today.

ALL IN HARWICH

Wolf Creek Cemetery Location 1
Lot 3 Con. 2 RTS
abt 530 Park Avenue (at Creek Road)
approx. 42.40604° 82.16039° source: John D. & Tom B.
Dowsing HIGHLY suggests about 6 burials here directly in line with the entrance into the parking lot and about two car lengths into the lot itself just beyond a drainage grate. Since this showed likely burials here we did not scan such further. However, the dowsing goes a long way to prove that this is a cemetery, but it does NOT say for certain, nor does it suggest that the cemetery name would be "Wolf Creek"!

Wolf Creek Cemetery Location 2
Lot 3 Con. 3
Part 1 24R-4021,
Creek Rd

Patrick Bullard drew a map locating this earlier but this is the second of the two possible locations. He mentions that Tobin family members are said to be buried here but this cannot be confirmed today; Across the creek (to the SW) are Native village grounds

civic address: 22632 Creek Road -- Source C-K Directory 5 March 2009. We caution that even IF an old cemetery exists at one of these locations it will be hard to prove that it IS actually this one. So, it is a VERY good possibility that we will never be able to solve this fully.

See more photographs of this possible cemetery location.

Tobin Family Cemetery - Did it exist?

The "Other" cemetery at the second noted location above MIGHT have been the Tobin family cemetery mentioned below. No markers now known. The possible location is given below. However, we also know of a Tobin plot in Old St Anthony's Cemetery still visible today. This might cast a doubt on the fact that the one mentioned above belonged to the Tobin Family. We should also note that the Wolf Creek Location 2 and the Tobin location MIGHT have actually been the same cemeteries.

In short, we cannot at this time tell if ANY cemeteries even existed on the second possible location of the Wolfe Creek Cemetery or if they did who was interred there. But we do know that it is LIKELY that there were at least 6 burials at the first one.

We have also not located the native area mentioned above, and would like to point out that this would indicate a very major native burial area near by. Please remember that much of Old Maple Leaf and Old St Anthony's were two relatively large native villages. We do NOT want this to be invaded by souvenir hunters. Thus we will NOT try to locate it. There is though a very good chance that this might be totally destroyed now.
